David de Gea sends message to Manchester United teammate Marcus Rashford after penalty miss

David de Gea has backed Marcus Rashford to bounce back stronger after his Euro 2020 final penalty miss.

It's been a cruel few weeks for Manchester United and England supporters in that regard.

Of course, the Europa League showpiece with Villarreal in Gdansk was settled from 12 yards as United goalkeeper De Gea himself missed to hand over the trophy to Spanish opponents.

That came after the 30-year-old failed to save a single attempt against Unai Emery's underdogs.

Fast forward six weeks and England headed to Wembley last night on the verge of bringing football home.

However, there was further heartbreak for Rashford - and his international teammates this time - as the frontman, United-bound Jadon Sancho and Arsenal prospect Bukayo Saka all passed up their chance from the spot.

That came after England captain Harry Kane and United defender Harry Maguire had scored their penalties, with Luke Shaw also netting in normal time as the Wembley clash finished 1-1.

Fans, fellow players and pundits have since reached out to the trio in their droves - though they were also subject to sickening racial abuse on social media.

De Gea and Spain were beaten in similar fashion by champions Italy in the semi-finals.

So with that - and the preceding Europa League showpiece against Villarreal still fresh in his mind - the Spaniard is sure to know exactly what club teammate Rashford is going through right now.

Posting on social media platform Twitter, the United goalkeeper said: "To fall and to rise. That's sport and you know it well. See you soon at home amigo."
