David de Gea's three possible Manchester United replacements ranked

David de Gea might only have ten days remaining as a Manchester United player as his confusing contract situation continues.

Erik ten Hag has continued to give his backing to the 32-year-old, but despite an interest in keeping him at the club, he has publicly warned there will be no assurances of him starting every week.

United want to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer, no matter what happens. They will either arrive as serious competition for De Gea or, as is increasingly likely, as his direct replacement.

United's priority is to sign a striker this summer, though there is an argument that an elite goalkeeper could actually have the most transformative impact on the side.

Man City took their performances to a whole new level following the high-profile signing of Ederson, while the same can be said of Liverpool's pursuit of his compatriot Alisson.

The only question now is who that should be. Uncertainty over the 'keeper department could earn Dean Henderson a shot at redemption in pre-season, though the feeling is that United want a fresh start as they look to mount a title challenge next year.

United have scouted Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who has generated interest from Brighton, though they would likely want to sign a ready-made replacement rather than one for the future.

The leading candidates appear to be Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa and Andre Onana of Inter Milan, both of whom have obvious merits.

A comparison using data from Squawka lifts the lid on those who appear best-suited to the role, though there is obvious mitigation to consider given the different leagues they have played in.

To make it as fair as possible, the stats only include league appearances this season and have been compared to what they average per 90 minutes, so that playing time doesn't skew the values.

What is alarming is that one of the only categories in which De Gea comes close to the top is goals conceded. Even though he won the Golden Glove for most clean sheets in the Premier League, his goals against record has been ruined by heavy defeats against Brentford, Man City and Liverpool in the league.

How the four goalkeepers compare per 90 mins (Squawka)

Verbruggen comes out on top across five different categories, while Costa and Onana both lead the way in four of their own. What is obvious is that all three of them appear better-suited to the demands of a modern goalkeeper than the current United number one.

To determine who would be the best bet this summer, Ten Hag must decide which factors matter most to him. Primarily, they must be good at keeping the ball out of the net, so we tend to look at save percentage rates and the number of goals conceded.

Ten Hag also wants his players to be comfortable with the ball at their feet, so that his side can assert their dominance in the match and start moves from the back. For this reason, passing accuracy is also highly important.

In typical unhelpful fashion, each goalkeeper leads the way in one of those. Onana in passing accuracy, Verbruggen in save percentage, and Costa in terms of goals conceded.

What is interesting, though, is that Costa ranks the highest across all three, ranking second in the two categories that he doesn't top himself in.

The Portugal international is therefore perhaps the most rounded candidate for United's needs this summer, though that isn't to say the others wouldn't be an improvement themselves.

With so much indecision regarding De Gea, Ten Hag needs to make sure his next shot-stopper really is a keeper.
