David De Gea's Manchester United future is still in doubt after it emerged the Spanish international keeper is yet to sign a new contract.
Reports last month suggested that United had agreed a bumper £350,000-a-week deal with De Gea that will keep him at Old Trafford beyond the end of the season.
But Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal that negotiations have failed to bring a breakthrough - and that United still have no idea whether the deal will be sealed.
De Gea, 28, will be free to talk to any interested foreign clubs in January.
And as that dateline approaches, the pressure will be on United to meet the keeper’s demands.
High-level United sources insist that talks are progressing and that they are confident of an agreement being reached.
But De Gea could earn himself a huge signing-on fee and contract if he opted to bide his time.
Real Madrid are long-term admirers of the Spain No 1 – and he would be a huge attraction to Bernabeu chiefs if he was available on a free.
De Gea joined United from Atletico Madrid for £22.5million.
He saw a deadline day move to Real break down four years ago and United were forced to trigger a 12-month contract extension after failing to convince him to stay last season.
De Gea feels he should be one of the club’s highest earners following the decision to hand Alexis Sanchez a £500,000-a-week package 18 months ago.
