David de Gea's heroics indicate a worrying Manchester United trend that needs to be stopped

There's a lot of doom and gloom surrounding Manchester United at the moment, but the form of David de Gea has definitely been a highlight of the club's underwhelming start to the campaign.

Perhaps the most concerning aspect of United's 4-2 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday was that nobody was really surprised when it happened, with moments of individual brilliance yet again overshadowed by wretched United defending.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have kept just one clean sheet in their 11 outings so far this season, with countless individual errors meaning they're already five points off the pace in the title race and have been dumped out of the Carabao Cup.

That being said, without the brilliance of De Gea, United would be in a far worse position than they are now.

You don't have to cast your mind back too long ago to recall a time when some fans were calling for the Spaniard to be sold.

After the 2018 World Cup, some people thought De Gea was past his peak. He wasn't playing well, he was making silly mistakes, he looked nervous whenever a cross came in and he didn't seem to have any real command of his area.

His dip in form coupled with the rise of Dean Henderson meant some believed it was best for Solskjaer to cash in on the former Atletico Madrid man - the United boss opted not to cut ties and his decision has definitely paid off.

De Gea has been absolutely superb this season, he's even saved a penalty - his first since he denied Leighton Baines from the spot all the way back in 2014.

The Spain international could already make a decent highlight reel of his best bits from the first few months of the 2021/22 season, with his double save from point-blank range to deny Romain Saiss against Wolves perhaps the pick of the bunch.

His save percentage from this season (70.6%) is up when compared to last season (67.1%) and if he continues his fine form he'll surely be a candidate for Manchester United's Player of the Year award.

However, should this really be viewed as a positive? Wow. things really are bad if we're questioning whether we should be happy that our number one is playing brilliantly!

I'm not saying this is a curse or anything but whenever De Gea's performances have been praised, it's come at a time when United have been playing poorly.

De Gea won three consecutive United Player of the Year awards in the 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons - the club finished seventh, fourth and fifth in those respective campaigns.

This might be the cynic in me but should we really be happy that our goalkeeper is being given the chance to make all of these great saves? After all, if your goalkeeper comes off the pitch having not had to save a single shot you'd probably be pretty happy, right?

If your team isn't playing on the front foot then the opposition are obviously going to create more chances and your goalkeeper is going to be tested more.

We're not going to go as far as to suggest that we're not happy that De Gea is playing well - obviously we are - but we'd far rather he wasn't given as many opportunities to showcase what a brilliant goalkeeper he is.
