David de Gea reveals Sergio Romero wish after Manchester United release

David de Gea says fellow goalkeeper Sergio Romero 'deserves to be treated well' after he was released by Manchester United this week.

Romero, 34, was one of eight players to be let go by United when the club officially announced their retained list on Friday afternoon.

The Argentine goalkeeper had been frozen out by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the return of Dean Henderson from Sheffield United last summer.

Despite being classified as the club's cup 'keeper Romero was disappointed to be dropped for all three semi-finals last season and took the demotion so badly he immediately decided to leave but was denied a transfer. He didn't make a single matchday squad this term.

Romero enjoyed mixed fortunes during his six years at Old Trafford, remaining hugely popular amongst supporters despite never establishing himself as the club's No.1

He will be hoping to kickstart his career now that his exit has been confirmed and close friend De Gea is keen to see his fellow shot-stopper finally get the credit he deserves.

"Good luck, Chiqui!" the Spaniard tweeted alongside pictures of him and Romero. "I wish you success, my friend. You deserve to be treated well in your new challenge. Enjoy."

Another goalkeeper to leave the club is Joel Pereira, with the 24-year-old released having spent time on loan at Huddersfield this season, where he made only two Championship appearances.

Six members of academy squads have also been released, with Jacob Carney, Mark Helm, Iestyn Hughes, Arnau Puigmal, Max Taylor and Aliou Traore told their time at the club has come to an end.
