David de Gea reacts to surpassing Peter Schmeichel's Manchester United record

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is aiming to add to his appearance haul for the Reds after surpassing Peter Schmeichel to become the most capped foreign player for the club.

De Gea was rarely called to action during the comfortable 3-0 win against Aston Villa on Thursday night that saw United move within one point of fourth-placed Leicester with four games remaining.

Goals from Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba extended United's unbeaten streak to 17 matches in all competitions.

De Gea helped the Reds keep their eighth clean sheet in 13 games and etched his name into the history books by becoming United's record appearance holder for a foreign player with 399 games, overtaking Schmeichel on 398.

The Spaniard now ranks behind only Alex Stepney in goalkeeping appearances for the club.

Reacting to surpassing Schmeichel's achievement, De Gea said he hopes to add another 400 games before calling time on his spell at Old Trafford.

"Sorry, Schmeichel!" he told MUTV with a smirk. "No, It's great.

"I think that means I've been here a long time and I've been playing really really well at the top level so I'm really really proud.

"I'm happy to play for this club for that many games.

"Hopefully there is another 400 games coming so I'm really really happy."

The United goalkeeper heaped praise on the performances of Fernandes and Pogba who continued to prove doubters wrong about their partnership in midfield.

He added: "They are working well together. We are creating many, many chances. That's good for the team.

"Not just them, the guys on the bench as well. The whole team is playing very well and we're focused. We are in a very good way.

"Both goals, one from Paul and one from Mason [were un-saveable]. Pepe [Reina] had a few players in front of him but the finish was very good. Great goals.

"The team is playing really well."
