David De Gea names four Manchester United leaders key to trophy hunt

David De Gea has called on his experienced teammates to help propel Manchester United to glory this season.

United’s goalkeeper was speaking to Sky Sports about the impact of Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the club and added that he thought four first-team players held the key to success for this season.

Specifically, De Gea cited himself, Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Juan Mata as the experienced players who would be leading the team this campaign as United aim to pick up their first piece of silverware since 2017:

“Now we have a bigger squad with big players.

“Players with experience like Cristiano, Rafa, me and Juan, so let’s see if it can be a great year.”

Combined the four players have won a whopping 51 major trophies, including 11 league titles, 10 Champions League winners' medals and two World Cups.

But when asked if this was the best squad he had had ever played with at United, De Gea was coy with his answer.

“I don’t know, I’ve played here with many, many good players and great squads," he said.

“But then this is football, you can have the best players in the world but then if something happens [that can change].

“We just need to remain focused and always be thinking about and preparing for the next game.”

Manchester United's next game is at home to Aston Villa at 12:30pm on Saturday.
