David de Gea handed Man Utd warning after Sergio Romero display vs Wolves

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appeared impressed with Sergio Romero's performance during his side's 0-0 draw with Wolves in the FA Cup third round and suggested he could soon challenge David de Gea for the No.1 spot.

The backup goalkeeper pulled off a string of impressive saves to keep his team in the game, including a wonderful reaction stop to prevent Wolves defender Matt Doherty from opening the scoring.

Romero has struggled for first-team minutes since joining United in 2015, with de Gea preferred over the 32-year-old in the vast majority of games, but he is expected to keep his place for the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City on Tuesday.

And Solskjaer hinted the Argentinean is knocking at the door for regular first-team opportunities.

When asked if he could replace de Gea as No.1 at the club, Solskjaer replied: "Yes. He was brilliant again, he normally is. Top professional, top human being. And the goalkeeping situation is great because you have competition.

"We have two of the best keepers in the world and it's great for me, and we want that in every single position. We want competition and Sergio [only] put one foot wrong today when he gave a corner kick. But he was brilliant.

"He is putting pressure on David de Gea and that's what we want. We want the best players in the world here."

It was a disappointing encounter between Wolves and United, with the visitors failing to record a shot on target for the first time in a domestic game since January 2015.

Nevertheless, Solskjaer looked on the positive side, despite the replay adding to his team's fixture congestion.

"I'm happier to be in the replay than going out- it's a tough place to come," he added.

"It's a competition I love. It's a fair result that we are both still in the cup."
