David de Gea gives verdict on new Manchester United signings

David de Gea is delighted with the business Manchester United have carried out this summer after training with two of the new arrivals this week.

The Spaniard has been working closely with Tom Heaton, a free transfer arrival from Aston Villa, in the goalkeeping group during pre-season, while £72.9million man Jadon Sancho joined up at Carrington for the first time on Monday.

United also expect to complete the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid imminently, with the 28-year-old centre back undergoing a medical after arriving in the UK from Madrid and quarantining.

It's been a positive transfer window so far for United and De Gea is pleased with the business done. In his decade as a United player the goalkeeper has become used to welcoming new faces during the summer but he insists it's still a thrill when new arrivals join the club.

“It’s always a pleasure to welcome new faces and quality players to add to the group, it’s always a positive,” De Gea told the club website.

“We still have the odd player to join up with the group, but [I’m] delighted with the new signings.”

De Gea is set to start the season in goal as Dean Henderson battles to get over the effects of Covid, which could mean Heaton is on the bench on Saturday when Leeds visit Old Trafford.

The 35-year-old returned to his boyhood club this summer and De Gea has already got to know him since he returned to pre-season training.

“[I’m especially excited to welcome] Tom, the keeper, who I’m with a lot of more of the time," he said.

“He’s a great bloke and a top keeper. He’s really going to bring a lot to the group and let’s hope it’s the same with the rest of the signings too.

“They have great quality and I reckon that it’ll be easy for them to settle in.”
