David de Gea breaks Man Utd players' social media silence after Wolves loss

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has broken a social media silence from the Red Devils' players after Monday night's disappointing defeat to Wolves.

United lost 1-0 at home courtesy of Joao Moutinho's late strike, ending interim boss Ralf Rangnick's unbeaten start.

It was a very underwhelming performance from United, who looked extremely disappointed at full-time.

Moutinho's strike came from a headed clearance from Phil Jones, who was making his first Premier League appearance in over two years.

But the defender otherwise impressed on his return to the first team alongside Raphael Varane, with club captain Harry Maguire sidelined through injury.

And De Gea took to Twitter to applaud the performance of his long-standing team-mate.

Quote tweeting United's official Twitter account about Jones' return, De Gea wrote: "Commitment. Proud to see you back on the pitch."

De Gea hasn't been the only one to praise Jones' comeback, with Luke Shaw also giving him a public pat on the back shortly after full-time.

"One thing I will say is Phil Jones should be proud of himself," the England left-back told Sky Sports.

"He has been criticised for years, and has gone through a lot, but he is so professional and he has trained hard and he was phenomenal.

"He was exceptional, I am very happy for him and he deserves it."

While Rangnick added: "There was no doubt at all regarding his attitude because I saw him training.

"If you consider hasn't played in two years it was a very good performance."

Rangnick was less than impressed with the majority of the rest of his squad though.

He told Sky Sports: "We didn’t play well at all individually or collectively. In the first half, we had big problems to keep them away from our goal.

"In the second half we changed to a back three and had more control then a spell of 15 minutes where we could have scored. The goal we conceded, we had enough players in the box.

"The cross had been defended by Jones but the goal we conceded was like too many this season.

"Moutinho could shoot unmarked with no problems, no pressure. We’re very disappointed about the result and parts of our performance.

“They’re playing with four or five central midfielders and we had problems to control that part of the pitch. We decided to change our formation and we had more control – they didn’t have as many chances – but we missed our chances and we have to admit they deserved to win.

He then added: “We didn’t press at all. We tried but we were not able to get into those pressing situations."
