David de Gea beats Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester United player of the month vote

Cristiano Ronaldo has taken the spotlight since his grand return to Old Trafford - but one of his Manchester United teammates shone even brighter in September.

After a stunning start to the season in August, last month saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his side stutter somewhat, before the international break.

Indeed, while they were able to pick up six points from a possible nine on offer in the Premier League, United were beaten in three separate competitions - culminating in Carabao Cup elimination.

Ronaldo touched down for his second act in England on deadline day.

His debut went right according to the script, too, as the Portugal sensation netted twice during a memorable 4-1 victory over Newcastle United - and Ronaldo followed it up with further goals against Young Boys, West Ham and Champions League opponents Villarreal.

During two of those games, though, it was David de Gea who stole the show.

Having been displaced at the end of last season, the long-serving Spaniard was presented with another chance to become first-choice at United when academy graduate Dean Henderson was forced to miss a chunk of pre-season after contracting Covid-19.

De Gea took full advantage of that opportunity and has rekindled his best form between the posts.
