It's the conundrum that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'solved' without really having to make a telling decision.
Dean Henderson will start for Manchester United against Young Boys tonight, but how many more times will he strap on the gloves at Old Trafford this season?
Even with multiple changes expected as Ralf Rangnick takes a closer look at his United squad - with qualification and top spot already sealed - you wouldn't expect Henderson to have much to do against the plucky Swiss team, although they were victorious in the opening, return match.
Much has changed at United since then; not only in the dugout.
One thing that remains, though, is David de Gea's position as number one between the posts.
A decade on from his Old Trafford arrival, that has been the case for pretty much the entirety. Henderson rose to challenge that standing midway through last season, but an unfortunate bout of Covid-19 presented a chance for De Gea which he, if you excuse the term, took with both hands.
Yet his impressive 2021 form - which resulted in a nomination for our United Fans' Footballer of the Year award - has not been without the odd error.

His move to 'play injured' against Arsenal might have, ordinarily, opened the door for Henderson.
However, in the midst of loan interest from Ajax in the England goalkeeper - which was broken exclusively by our chief Manchester United reporter Samuel Luckhurst - one early transfer decision Rangnick might have had to make as interim manager has already been outlined for him.
If there's one thing we know about Henderson, it's that he won't give up without a fight.
Development loans at Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury proved that he is not afraid to get out of his comfort zone, while a would-be (temporary) move to the Eredivisie strengthens that further as Henderson continues to push for his ultimate aim; to be first choice at Old Trafford.
For all intents and purposes, that was a title he held for the second half of last term.

One - soon-to-be two - appearances since withdrawing from the Euro 2020 squad through injury is not enough for a player with that ambition, though, and another loan switch might prove to be the best option for all parties - right now - easing one particular conundrum for Rangnick.

De Gea's form dip and Henderson's illness meant Solskjaer could twice make the call without really making it.
Depending what role Rangnick finds himself in beyond the summer, the innovative German might also avoid having to flip the coin there, too, but granting Henderson permission to board a short flight to the Netherlands will provide much-needed breathing space for whoever is manager next season to sit back, observe and assess, before issuing a clear stance once and for all next season.
