Manchester United’s injury crisis deepened on Thursday when David de Gea was withdrawn from the team to face Midtjylland in the Europa League after hurting himself in the warm-up.
Initial indications were that the goalkeeper hurt an ankle but there was no immediate confirmation from United. Sergio Romero stepped up from the bench to replace De Gea in the starting XI, leaving Louis van Gaal without a replacement keeper.
De Gea becomes the 11th United player out because of injury and the list will rise to 12 if it is confirmed that Marouane Fellaini has suffered a hamstring tear. Fellaini was left out of the squad for the last-32 opening leg at Midjytlland and has seen a specialist in Belgium.
Wayne Rooney is among the other injured players. The captain is expected to be out for six weeks because of knee problem.
