David Culley says Deshaun Watson is the Texans’ starting QB ‘as of right now’

The biggest problem new Houston Texans coach David Culley has had to address is one that he didn’t create: the franchise’s standoff with starting quarterback Deshaun Watson.

The fourth full-time coach in Texans history joined Steve Wyche and Jim Trotter on the Huddle&Flow podcast to talk about the situation with Watson. Co-host Wyche point blanked asked Culley if Watson will be the starting quarterback for the team in 2021.

“He is our starting quarterback as of right now,” Culley said. “He is our starting quarterback. Things happen between now and then, and we’ll see what happens.”

The hosts pointed out that Culley used the phrase “right now” and that the 65-year-old had “been around” given his decades in the NFL.

“That’s right — right now, and hopefully in the future,” said Culley.

The rookie coach, who was previously the Baltimore Ravens’ passing game coordinator and receivers coach the past two seasons, stated he doesn’t hear any of the noise outside of NRG Stadium regarding Watson.

“Basically with us everything that is concerned with us inside this building with the way we’re going about our business right now is that it is positive,” said Culley. “I am excited to be here. One of the reasons I am excited to be here is because of Deshaun Watson. And regardless of what’s happening outside this building, which quite frankly, fellas, I don’t hear or read or listen to what happens outside this building. I don’t. I have people come up to me all the time and ask me about this and ask me about the situation.

“But the point is inside this building, inside this organization, we feel positive about moving forward with this football team with Deshaun Watson.”

Culley may be positive, but Houston sports fans are not, and the situation could get even uglier before a resolution of any kind manifests.
