David Cox backing delights Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid as fans and players show support

Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid was delighted to see fans and players show their support for David Cox during yesterday's 1-1 draw with Brechin City.

Cox retired from the game at half-time of Thursday night's win over Stenhousemuir amid allegations Warriors defender Jonathan Tiffoney taunted him over a failed suicide attempt six years ago.

It is a claim Tiffoney denies, but the incident is being investigated by the SFA.

Rovers players all wore t-shirts in the warm-up on Saturday baring the Back Onside mental health charity logo, of which Cox is an ambassador.

Cox was also in attendance to watch his former side and Rovers fans also made their feelings clear, holding up a "We Stand With David" banner outside Cliftonhill.

Reid has refused to comment on Thursday's incident, but he was pleased to see the support the forward has received since his emotional post online after the Stenny game.

Reid said: "David was in on Saturday and he was in about the players, wearing the Back Onside t-shirts so it was a good day for him in that respect to see that support for him.

"You saw the fans holding up a banners as well.

"The club have made a statement on what happened and I just wish him well and hope he goes on to have a good career in terms of his personal training work he does."

Reid also revealed there is no chance the former Airdrie and Cowdenbeath player - who owns a gym in Motherwell - will reverse his decision to quit the game.

He added: "I spoke to David at length on Saturday and we've had a good chat.

"I'm disappointed for the boy with everything that's happened, but he's made his mind up that that's him finished.

"Not one thing I say or do is going to change that.

"It's disappointing because he's only 32 but I'm not going to go against the boy's wishes or anything like that.

"We wish him well because he's been a good character here."

On the day, Rovers netted a late penalty through Matty Aitken to cancel out a Kieran Inglis spot-kick for the visitors nine minutes into the second half, while Aaron Lynas saw red for Rovers in stoppage time.
