David Coote given first Liverpool match since Virgil van Dijk and VAR controversy

Referee David Coote will take charge of Liverpool's fourth round Carabao Cup match against Preston North End on Wednesday night.

This will be the first time Coote has been involved in a Liverpool match since the controversy surrounding Virgil van Dijk 's injury against Everton last season.

Coote was on VAR duty that day as the Dutchman was clattered by Jordan Pickford and suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage as a result.

Instead of focusing on the challenge from the goalkeeper, the decision not to send Pickford off was based on a marginal offside call.

The Reds were left 'concerned and confused' by the VAR decisions made that day, as Jordan Henderson had a late goal ruled out for offside and the match ended 2-2.

Coote has not been involved in a Liverpool game in any capacity since and he was dropped from officiating the week after the incident.

He was put on VAR duty for the Reds' meeting with Leicester City a month later, but the decision was eventually overturned by the Premier League after it was met with criticism.

The official has taken charge of just one Liverpool match in his career, which was back in the 2019/2020 season when the Reds drew 1-1 with Burnley at Anfield.

Coote will now officiate at Deepdale on Wednesday night with assistants Nick Hopton and Wade Smith, plus fourth official John Brooks.

VAR will not be in use against Preston North End as it is not used in the Carabao Cup until the semi-final stage.

There has been little to no opposition with the decision to appoint Coote on this occasion, likely due to the profile of the game.

The Reds will be hoping to book their place in the fifth round of the competition with a win over Frankie McAvoy's side.
