David Clifford pays touching tribute to Red Og Murphy after leading Kerry to League title

David Clifford was in inspired form as Kerry landed the Division 1 title with a convincing 3-19 to 0-13 win over Mayo at Croke Park.

The Kingdom star led the way for his side with 1-6 - including a brilliant individual goal - and paid a touching tribute to Sligo footballer Red Og Murphy, who died suddenly on Friday, in his speech after the game.

The crowd at Croke Park responded with warm applause when Clifford said: "I just want to send regards from everyone in Kerry GAA to the family of Red Og Murphy from Sligo.

"We were all lucky enough to see Red Og play in the Sigerson (Cup) this year and we all saw what he could do, so sending our best wishes to the family from everyone in Kerry GAA."

Tributes have poured in following Murphy's tragic death at the age of 21.

He had been studying primary school teaching at DCU and was a talented prospect playing for his club Curry GAA, at inter-county level with Sligo and with his college. He also spent eight months playing Australian Rules with North Melbourne in 2019.

Sligo county councillor Martin Connolly, who was Murphy's neighbour, told the Irish Mirror that the local community is "devastated" and "speechless" as it rallies around to support his family.

"The community is devastated here. The parish of Curry in Sligo, the parish that he played for, the community is absolutely devastated.

"Speechless is the word I'd put on it. People are walking around in a daze, they don't know what has happened.

"Our sympathies is all we can do, to give our sympathies to his dad and mum, Geraldine and Redmond, and his two brothers.

"The community is rallying around here big time. There are ten or 15 people in the community centre, cleaning it and getting it ready for the events that'll happen in the next couple of days."
