David Clifford backed to build on spectacular 2019 season by Kerry teammate Paul Geaney

New Kerry captain David Clifford is only going to get better and better, says Paul Geaney.

Clifford, who turns 21 today, was confirmed as the Kingdom skipper for 2020 this week having been nominated by the East Kerry division after spearheading their county title success last year.

His Kerry attacking colleague Geaney is supportive of a move to decouple the county champions from the team captaincy but, despite his tender age, Clifford is already well established as an inter-county footballer having picked up a pair of All Stars in his first two seasons.

“I didn’t break into the team until to 24 and before that, physically I wasn’t able for that level I’d say, or conditioned,” says Geaney. “I wasn’t in that condition. He is continually developing his condition which is only going to make him better and better and better.”

He continued: “He has the physical attributes to be able to do it in his ranginess. It was like Michael Murphy when he came out of minor, and Aidan O’Shea, they were two big, strong fellas that were ready for senior football physically, we will say.

“It would be different for a skillful guy, who has all the skills that David has, but might be slight.

“It would be a lot more difficult for them to make that transition, but David had all the tools ready to do it, but he just fitted seamlessly into it, which was great.

“It was great for us, but yeah hopefully we will see the best of him, and there will be no injury curtailing him. That’s a key thing in inter county football.

“A lot of footballers have had serious potential but just couldn’t stay injury free for one reason or another.

“There is no sign of that yet anyway so it’s great. Onward and upward for him.”
