David Cameron slammed for joke about trophy hunting after naming dead stag 'Boris'

David Cameron has been slammed for making light of trophy hunting, after joking he had named a stag he killed after Boris Johnson .

The former Prime Minister has long been a supporter of cruel bloodsports, admitting to hunting deer and grouse with a shotgun and taking part in horseback fox hunting.

And he tried and failed to ease restrictions on hunting with dogs when he first became Prime Minister in 2010.

And now he has admitted to taking up deer stalking again.

According to the Times, Cameron shot a deer on the Isle of Jura last month and named it after Boris Johnson.

Chris Luffingham, director of campaigns at the League Against Cruel Sports, said: “There is nothing funny about cold-bloodedly shooting animals for pleasure and making puerile jokes about it.

“Trophy hunting is a disgusting practice and it will horrify most British people to know it is taking place in this country.”

Cameron has previously joked about naming animals and birds after rivals Johnson and Michael Gove in his head when he pulls the trigger.

After stepping down as PM in 2016, he told a dinner of bankers in Switzerland: “‘I have used the extra time to take up shooting again.

“I find that when I shoot a few Borises and Michaels I feel a whole lot better.”
