David Cameron claimed the row over whether he felt “privileged pain” after the death of his disabled son Ivan had “passed me by”.
The former PM said that he “couldn’t understand” what a controversial editorial in The Guardian had been trying to say about his grief.
But he said that since the newspaper had subsequently apologised, via a tweet from the editor, he was happy to “leave it there”.
Mr Cameron revealed that he had deleted the twitter app from his phone as he was spending too much time on it and as a result “this whole disagreement” passed him by.
He told LBC radio: “It had been published, complained about, withdrawn and I got an apology from Kath Viner, the editor of The Guardian, before I’d hardly even seen it, so I hadn’t actually read.”
He added: “Look, there is no privilege in holding your eldest born child in your arms as their life drains away. Death knows no privilege.
“So I, from the little I saw it, I couldn’t understand what they were trying to say. But fortunately it has been deleted and apologised for, so I think we can leave it there.”
The newspaper editorial had suggested that Mr Cameron may have been insulated from the suffering experienced by other NHS users because of his wealth and background.
