David Cameron resigns: Prime Minister and wife Samantha visibly emotional during resignation speech

Samantha Cameron became visibly emotional as David Cameron's voice wavered during his resignation speech this morning.

Britain voted to leave the European Union in a historic referendum which saw 72 per cent of the British population come out to vote, prompting calls for the Prime Minister to step down.

Shortly after 8.30am, Mr Cameron and his wife greeted the world’s media outside Number 10. He announced that he will be stepping down as Prime Minister within the next three months as “it would not be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination”.

Mr Cameron will stay on until a new Conservative leader is elected before the Tory party conference begins in October.

His voice cracked as he told reporters: “I love this country and I feel honoured to have served it and I will do everything I can in future to help this great country succeed.”

As the PM's voice wavered, there were suggestions Ms Cameron wiped away tears as she watched her husband resign.

Mr Cameron was seen patting her back as they turned away from reporters and headed back into Number 10.

The Leave campaign clinched victory with 51.9 per cent of the vote and 17,410,742 votes while Remain amassed 16,141,214 votes and 48.1 per cent of the vote.
