Former Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted he does not regret calling the referendum despite the UK descending into Brexit chaos.

Mr Cameron told Sky News on Monday night he “made a promise to the British people”.

But he added he was very concerned about Theresa May’s dramatic day in the Commons.

He said: “Of course I don’t regret calling a referendum. I made a promise in the election to call a referendum, and I called the referendum.

“Obviously I’m very concerned about what’s happening today, but I do support the Prime Minister in her efforts to try and have a close partnership with the EU.

“That’s the right thing to do, and she has my support.”

Mr Cameron then entered the back seat of a car, while being asked by reporters if he should “apologise to the British people”.

The ex-Conservative leader had previously said leaving the EU would be “an act of economic and political self-harm”.

Just before the 2015 general election Mr Cameron told voters they faced a "simple and inescapable choice - stability and strong Government with me, or chaos with Ed Miliband".

During campaigning on the EU membership issue Mr Cameron said leaving the single market would be "needless and reckless" and that cutting ties with Brussels would "hit our service industries hard".

But after insisting he would stay on whatever the outcome of the vote, he resigned the day after the narrow Leave win on June 24, 2016.
