David Cameron admits 'terrible' mistake blabbing about chats with the Queen

David Cameron has hinted at a possible rift with Buckingham Palace after admitting he made a "terrible mistake" in blabbing about private chats with the Queen.

The former Prime Minister was quizzed about two separate indiscretions as he was questioned today on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

It comes after he revealed he suggested the monarch could ‘raise an eyebrow’ during the Scottish referendum campaign, at a time when the polls were narrowing in favour of the ‘Yes’ campaign.

The Queen later made a surprise plea to Scots to ‘think very carefully’ about how they would vote, just a week before the September 2014 referendum.

Today Mr Cameron insisted "I never asked for anything improper to be said or done".

He said: "The context for this... is at the time Alex Salmond was going round saying Her Majesty would be the proud monarch of an independent Scotland.

"This concerned me because my side of the argument couldn't really say anything about that.

"So I had conversations with private secretaries and the like but I never asked for anything improper to be said or done."

He added sheepishly: "I think I don’t want to say anything more about this.

"I'm sure some people would think, possibly even me, that I’ve already said perhaps a little bit too much."

Mr Cameron was also asked about his crass comment that the Queen "purred down the line" after Scotland voted against independence in 2014.

"That was a terrible mistake for which I apologised immediately", he told the BBC.
