David Brooks' childhood Manchester United hero, his Euro 2016 memories and what the future holds

David Brooks has revealed that Wales boss Ryan Giggs was his childhood hero.

Brooks was given his international bow by Chris Coleman against France in November 2017 but made his competitive debut under Giggs last year.

Such has been his rapid rise, FAW Awards 2019: David Brooks steals the show as full list of winners are revealed becoming the first player to win both prizes in the same season.

And Brooks - who supported Manchester United during his childhood - admits he'll be taking everything his national team boss has to say on board in a bid to develop his own game.

“I was a United fan. I wouldn't say I had a picture of him on my wall but yeah obviously he is a hero of mine," admitted Brooks.

“He has a nice left foot and has played at the highest level so you have to look up to him.

“Whatever advice he gives I am going to take on board."

Brooks missed the 1-0 friendly win over Trinidad and Tobago at Wrexham's Racecourse ground on Wednesday night due to an ankle problem sustained while playing for Bournemouth.

But the 21-year-old hopes to be fit to return to action for Wales' opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The youngster revealed he watched Wales' stunning Euro 2016 win over Slovakia at his Warrington home and admits the current crop are desperate to emulate the success Coleman's troops had in France.

“I was watching at home unfortunately on that one. It was a great campaign," added Brooks.

"The boys coming in who have not had a taste for it want that, and the boys who have been there and done that, want to get there again.

"It is a nice mix and hopefully we can get there."

Brooks recently signed a long-term contract with Bournemouth but has been linked with a move away from the Vitality Stadium as a result of his impressive form for Eddie Howe's side.

And while he's currently happy with the Cherries, Brooks admits he could one day follow in the footsteps of the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey in moving abroad.

“I have said many times when I go into the league, you back yourself to do well but to make the impact I probably did as early on, I wouldn't have probably guessed and assumed I was going to do that," he added.

"But you back yourself when you get the chance.

“I don't know what the future holds for myself. I want to play at the highest level possible whether that is abroad or in England. Obviously the aim is to get up there and whatever opportunities come, I will have to make the decisions then.

“I am not really expecting it (offers from elsewhere), the reason I signed the contract is I am happy at Bournemouth and the way my progression is going.

"I want that to continue and for the focus not to be on anything else. That is why I signed and I am very happy at Bournemouth."
