David Bowie, who died on Sunday aged 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer, is survived by his wife the Somalian supermodel Iman Abdulmajid, and his children Duncan Jones, the son from his marriage to first wife Angie Bowie and his daughter with Iman, Lexi who is 14.
Bowie married the supermodel in a romantic ceremony in Tuscany on 24 April, 1992.
The couple were often regarded as one of the most stable in the public eye having been married for 23 years.
They were also known for being particularly private of their marriage. In 2013 Iman, 60, was interviewed by Naomi Campbell for Interview magazine and told her: “We are very private so we decided from early on that we will keep the press and editors and everybody out of our house.”
Iman has not yet commented on her husband’s death but yesterday posted a poignant tweet about a “struggle”.
Only a few times over the many years did the pair reveal details about their life together. Bowie reportedly once said: “You would think that a rock star being married to a supermodel would be one of the greatest things in the world. It is.”
Iman too gave just a few accounts of her talented husband, providing an insight into the man many are mourning today.
Here’s Iman’s most poignant quotes about the iconic performer:
“I fell in love with David Jones. I did not fall in love with David Bowie. Bowie is just a persona. He’s a singer, an entertainer.” The Guardian, 2014.
“We have fun with each other. He’s very English in a way that he’s a gentleman.” - Interview, 2013.
“David is even more of a homebody than I am. At least I go to parties once in a while. I also think that there is nothing that he hasn’t seen/ He’s been to all the parties that there are.” The Guardian
“No! Honey, I have hips… I will never fit.” On discussing whether they ever share clothes in Interview magazine.
“My father taught me how to be a parent and gave me a positive connection with men because he is a gentlemen. And that’s what attracted me to David. He is a gentle soul.” Harpers Bazaar, 2010.
