Today would have been David Bowie’s 79th birthday and also marks the 10th anniversary of the music legend’s final album, ‘Blackstar’.
Bowie died two days later, on 10 January 2016, following an 18-month battle with cancer.
To mark his "Heavenly Birthday", his widow, Iman, and his daughter, Lexi, have posted tributes online.
One is a black and white photo of the music icon smiling, alongside the caption: “A million feeling, A thousand thoughts, A hundred memories…. YOU! Happy Heavenly Birthday.” The other is an old photo of Lexi with her father on his birthday, with the caption: “Da big 79 today. Happy birthday pops, miss ya!”.

Others paying tribute to Bowie today include the musician’s longtime producer and collaborator Tony Visconti, who posted on Facebook: “Today is the birthday of Anthony Ferdinand Visconti, my father. It is also the birthday of my musical friend David Bowie. I’m glad I was able to introduce them to each other. I loved them both and I miss them like nobody’s business.”
Another tribute came from photographer and director Anton Corbijn, who shared a picture of Bowie in 1980. “It’s 10 years without this beautiful person. His music lives on and i’m grateful for all that he left,” he wrote.

Elsewhere, Bowie’s 1977 song ‘Heroes’ has had a spike in streams after being featured in the Stranger Things finale, which was released on 1 January.
According to new Luminate data, ‘Heroes’ saw a surge of almost 500 per cent on streaming services following the last episode of the Duffer Brothers’ hit Netflix show.
Ross Duffer recently revealed that ‘Heroes’ had been selected after it was suggested by Joe Keery, who plays Steve Harrington in the series.
Meanwhile, a new documentary titled Bowie: The Final Act has been released in UK and Irish cinemas, and the BBC have announced that a new Bowie doc, Bowie In Berlin, will be released later this year. The documentary film will explore the icon’s time in Berlin between 1976 and 1978.
The British Library will host an event, ‘David Bowie In Time’, to honour Bowie on 17 January.
