David Bowie left this plane of existence in January 2016, but his son, Duncan Jones, is inviting readers to take part in an online book club in honor of the thin, white and literary duke.
As reported in Rolling Stone, Jones declared that his father was "a beast of a reader." Bowie's top 100 books, posted on his website in 2013, ranged from Homer's "Illiad" to Junot Diaz's "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," with titles by Flaubert, Faulkner, Camus and DeLillo along the way.
Jones, a writer and director known for "Moon," "Source Code" and "Warcraft: The Beginning" chose Peter Ackroyd's "Hawksmoor" as the first selection. This, Jones later acknowledged, was maybe not a great selection; the 1985 mystery novel is apparently out of print. As of press time, Half Price Books reported zero copies in stores nationwide; editions were available through independent sellers on Amazon, ranging from $108 to $1,710.
Jones decried "price gougers" and tweeted, "I promise book 2 will be selected on the strict critieria that it is far more easy to get hold of."
