David Bellamy dead aged 86 as tributes pour in for iconic TV presenter

Tributes have poured in for iconic TV presenter David Bellamy who has died aged 86.

The author, broadcaster and naturalist worked on hundreds of television and radio programmes during his career and was often seen on Blue Peter and other children's shows to teach kids about the environment.

His death was announced by The Conservation Foundation, which he helped to found.

They said: "The Conservation Foundation is greatly saddened to announce the death on 11th December 2019 of Professor David Bellamy OBE, our co-founder and President. The Foundation was very special to David and he was very special to us."

Bellamy died on Wednesday, according to the foundation, of which he was president and co-founder.

In a statement, David Shreeve, director of the Conservation Foundation, said: "Sadly, I have to report that David Bellamy died this morning.

"David and I worked together on a variety of projects in a various places since launching The Conservation Foundation in 1982.

"He was a larger-than-life character who became a very special friend and teacher.

"He inspired a whole generation with his wide range of interests and enthusiasm which knew no bounds.

"The Conservation Foundation was very special to him and so today is very sad for all of us."

Tributes have already begun to flood in on Twitter for Mr Bellamy who was well respected.

Chris Hopkin said: "Sad to hear David Bellamy has passed away.

"Always gave so much excitement into his nature shows and captivated me as a kid."

Amy Louise also said: "Really saddened to hear about David Bellamy.

"Loved watching him when I was younger. Appearing from the #undergwowth and talking about things being covered in green slimy moss."
