David Beckham signing opens up on Liverpool transfer concern

Inter Miami star Juan Agudelo has said Liverpool wanted to sign him ahead of his move to Stoke City in 2014.

The United States international joined the Potters six years ago after interest from both Celtic and the Reds.

Agudelo, now playing for David Beckham's franchise in the MLS, never made a single appearance for Stoke after failure to secure a work permit.

Speaking to MLS Soccer, the 27-year-old expressed concerns about being loaned out if he would have made the Anfield switch.

He explained: “I had three situations where (transfers) were scratched. I thought for sure I was going to go to Celtic.

“It was tough. I don’t know if I would have went to Liverpool and got loaned out, but I definitely wanted to go to Celtic. It was a place I was probably going to play.”

The former New York Red Bulls striker later joined FC Utrecht on loan as Stoke again attempted to secure a work permit for him.

But after failure to do so Agudelo opted to return to the US. He signed for New England Revolution before making the move to Toronto.

Earlier this year the forward joined Inter Miami and before the coronavirus saw stateside action curtailed he had made two appearances for the Florida-based outfit.
