David Beckham's son Romeo signs his first ever professional football contract

Romeo Beckham is set to follow in his father David’s footsteps after signing his first ever professional football contract.

The 19-year-old has signed us with US side Fort Lauderdale, who operate as the reserve team for the former England star’s Inter Miami franchise.

And he could make his debut as early as this weekend, as the team prepare to take on Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Saturday night local time, the Mirror reports.

Both teams play in the US League One, which is the third tier of football in America.

Romeo could also line up alongside Harvey Neville, who is the son of David’s ex-Manchester United teammate Phil.

Romeo announced the news with a post on Instagram in his new kit, along with the caption: "Follow your dreams."

He also changed his bio on the social media platform to: "Footballer for @fortlauderdalecf".

Mum Victoria was keen to show her support, commenting on his picture: We are so proud of you Romeo x.”

Similar to his father, Romeo operates down the right flank, but is more versatile as he can play in both defence and attack.

Romeo has already trained with Inter Miami, who boast a number of world-renowned stars, and is often seen cheering them on at matches alongside his former England captain father.

The family moved out to Miami permanently over Christmas, with Victoria telling Vogue earlier this year: "Romeo has been training with the team over here every day, because ultimately that’s what he wants to do."

He is the second eldest child of the Beckham's, after Brooklyn, who was also pursuing a football career before opting to move into modelling and photography instead.

Both were involved at Arsenal's academy, along with younger brother Cruz, when the Beckham's lived in the UK.

Arsenal fan Romeo then left soon after Brooklyn was released by the club in 2015, with David saying at the time: “Romeo said he didn’t want to play football any more. He’s got other passions and I like that.”

He did have a keen interest in tennis and two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray was even giving him tips at one stage, though has now reverted to football.

And he seems to have inherited some of his father's skills, as a video posted online back in May showed him curling a free-kick into the top corner, very much like Beckham Snr's famous goal for England against Greece in 2001.

Romeo recently celebrated his 19th birthday with a party in Miami, complete with huge football-themed cake.

Dad David sent him a touching message on social media, writing: "Happy 19th birthday to my beautiful boy. Have the most amazing day we love you so much and are so proud of the man (almost) that you have become..

"Keep being you and never change (apart from the team you support). Love you Ro Ro. Love always Dad."
