David Beckham's message for Nottingham Forest starlet after international debut

After Nottingham Forest youngster Brennan Johnson made his senior international debut on Thursday night, the messages of congratulations flooded in - including from some high-profile stars.

The 19-year-old, who is on a season-long loan at Lincoln City, came off the bench to win his first cap for Wales at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium.

Johnson entered the fray just past the hour mark of a friendly against the United States and went close to scoring with his first touch, only to be denied by a fine save from Zack Steffen.

The match finished goal-less, but Johnson spoke of his pride at featuring for his country.

Posting a picture of himself coming on as a substitute, he wrote on Instagram: “What a feeling making my international debut for @fawales. A night I won’t forget.”

Among those to respond was England and Manchester United great David Beckham, who keeps tabs on the teenager’s career.

Beckham is friends with Johnson’s dad, David, the former Forest forward, from their time together in the youth ranks at Old Trafford.

He wrote: “Great night for you and the family tonight mate congratulations @brenjohnson_ @daj1976.”

A number of Forest players also added messages.

Defender Loic Mbe Soh wrote, “congrats”, alongside a flame emoji.

Striker Lyle Taylor said: “Congrats brother.”

And fellow Reds youngster Alex Mighten posted: “Love it.”

Assistant coach Robert Page, who took charge of Wales in the absence of manager Ryan Giggs, had hinted in the build-up to the match that Johnson could get a run-out.

He had said: "He's out at Lincoln and, for me, he's made the right decision to go and play competitive league football.

"He's scoring goals and he's going to learn from that experience. We will then reap the rewards from that. In the last couple of camps, he's been impressive.

"He's one that will definitely be in contention."

Forest defender Scott McKenna, too, had cause for celebration. He was an unused substitute as Scotland clinched their place at next year's European Championships with a penalty shootout victory over Serbia.
