David Beckham is reported to have signed a new deal with a clothing brands company, prompting speculation that the former England captain is set to follow in his wife Victoria’s footsteps and launch his own fashion line.
According to reports in Womens Wear Daily (WWD), Beckham, with his business partner, Simon Fuller, has signed a deal with Global Brands, a Hong Kong-based consumer brands supplier which also distributes Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger.
Precise details of what Beckham’s line will encompass are unknown. At a press conference on Wednesday Beckham, alongside Fuller and Global Brands chief executive Bruce Rockowitz, disclosed very little, although they did concede that the deal will cover various product categories and will be distributed globally. It’s thought Beckham and Fuller will be 50/50 partners with Global Brands.
“We won’t be building just one brand. Creating a sportswear or underwear line with David would be great but we want to do more,” Rockowitz said.
According to Global Brands, the decision to work with the pair was self-explanatory. They described Beckham’s “star power and status as one of the world’s most famous sports and style icons,” alongside Fuller’s “deep understanding of consumers, talent, and sports and entertainment rights,” as the main reasons behind the collaboration.
It’s not the first time Beckham has toyed with the fashion industry. Previous collaborations include H&M, Adidas, Belstaff and his bestselling fragrance partnership with Coty Inc.
Beckham said: “This is a partnership that is very exciting for me. Throughout my career I’ve had quite a few sponsorship deals but this takes it to a different level, a different area. I’ve gone from being in a sponsorship deal to now becoming an owner. It’s an area I’m really excited about.”
As yet there are no plans for the Beckhams to collaborate. “Her business is separate from this but obviously she’s part of this too because we’re partners,” explained Beckham. “We’re husband and wife. She’s excited about this.”
