David Beckham led Manchester United stars on paintballing spree that wrecked club bus

Prankster David Beckham led Manchester United stars on a paint- balling spree that wrecked the club bus, a teammate has revealed.

Becks – nicknamed Goldenballs – had picked up paintball guns with teammate Ryan Giggs for the squad to enjoy on a boozy away-day.

But the footballer, then aged 22, and other players opened fire on the bus, leaving it in need of a respray.

Former defender David May, 50, told the Utd Podcast that players were left “black and blue” after the 1998 session.

He said: “Becks and Giggsy went to a paintballing shop and they come out with these £500 paintballing guns – brand new, like silver revolvers they were.

“We peppered the bus. The bus had to be resprayed because there were dents.”

Asked if it was a safe pastime for top professionals, May said: “You go in the next morning and everyone’s black and blue.”

Dutch player Jordi Cruyff was judged the most lethal after picking off his rivals while sat quietly in a bush

Jonathan Greening, 42, who joined the trip after his first training session since moving from York City, said: “I was like, really? Biggest club in the world – we’re off on an all-dayer.

“We ended up going to a pub, playing cards, and then in town.

“I remember phoning my mum and dad and saying, ‘You wouldn’t believe what happened yesterday. I went on an all-dayer with Peter Schmeichel and Giggsy and Becks and Maysy’.
