David Beckham helped Kate Garraway's family as Derek lay in hospital

England football legend David Beckham reached out to Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway to help her and her family as husband Derek Draper lay in a coma in hospital, it has been revealed.

Beckham recorded personal messages of encouragement for children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, last year, Kate has revealed in her new book Kate Garraway: The Power Of Hope, which is being serialised by the Mail On Sunday.

The TV host said that David, 45, reached out to her on Instagram after Derek was put into an induced coma.

Kate writes in her book: "I hadn’t had the chance to look at social media so it was Darcey and Billy who spotted it and squealed with delight.

"I messaged him back, thanking him and saying the kids were thrilled."

Kate revealed that the father-of-four went on to send personalised videos to give her children encouragement during the difficult time, writing: "He sent a personal video to each of them – words of encouragement and fun.

"He said he’d been thinking of his own kids and how they might feel."

Derek spent more than a year in hospital after his body was ravaged by Covid-19, and has only been allowed home this month.

Their family home has been specially adapted and Derek requires constant care.
