David Beckham and Marcus Rashford lead tributes on anniversary of Munich air disaster

Tributes have been pouring in on the 62nd anniversary of the Munich air disaster, which killed eight members of Manchester United's famous Busby Babes side along with three club officials, eight journalists and four supporters.

The tragedy took place on February 6 1958, when the plane the squad were travelling on following a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade crashed on its third attempt to take off in snowy conditions at Munich-Riem Airport.

Among those to lose their lives were star players Duncan Edwards and Tommy Taylor, while their manager Matt Busby suffered multiple injuries.

A memorial service is being held at Old Trafford today, and a number of high-profile names have paid their respects on social media.

David Beckham took to Instagram to post a black-and-white picture of the squad along with the caption: "Today we remember The Flowers of Manchester, their legacy lives on forever."

Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, posted the same picture and wrote: "There's not a day goes by that I take this shirt for granted. The Flowers of Manchester."

Harry Maguire posted a different picture of the team along with the caption: "We will remember them", while the official Liverpool social media account put their rivalry with United to the side to post: "The thought of LFC are with all those affected by the Munich air disaster. 62 years ago today, but never forgotten."

A minute's silence will be held at 15.04 today (Manchester United)

The service at Old Trafford will start at 14.45, and will see Bryan Robson and Casey Stoney laying wreaths on behalf of the club, while there will also be prayers and songs, including the anthem The Flowers of Manchester .

Two academy players will also read out a short Munich poem and the names of those who lost their lives will be read out before a minute's silence at 15.04- which is the time the crash occurred.
