David Bates set for Hamburg exit as former Rangers defender told he can leave

Former Rangers defender David Bates is set to leave Hamburg, with the German club confirming "we're in talks".

The 23-year-old signed a pre-contract deal with Die Rothosen in April 2018, moving on a four-year deal in the summer.

However, Hamburg have repeatedly failed to win promotion to the Bundesliga, and Bates was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday last season.

The 23-year-old was not involved as the team returned for pre-season training on Wednesday, and is set to seal a move away.

Sporting director Jonas Boldt confirmed: "We're in talks."

While Bates is still under contract until next summer, it's reported he is not part of new coach Daniel Thioune's plans.

Boldt did not reveal which clubs the centre-back is speaking to, but it's rumoured he'll move to the Belgian Pro League.

Bates has been capped four times by Scotland, making his debut in a 4-0 win over Albania in November 2018.

After breaking through at Raith Rovers he was snapped up by Rangers in 2016, managing 28 appearances and one goal.

He managed just one appearance in his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season.
