David Bates in Rangers return link as Ibrox club tipped to make offer amid Brentford transfer interest

Rangers have been linked with a surprise move to bring former Ibrox star David Bates back to Glasgow.

The centre-back left the club for Hamburg in 2018 but struggled to win a place in the team, and has spent the last two seasons out on loan.

He joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2019 but missed almost the entire season with a hip flexor injury.

And that led to him spending last season in Belgium with Cerle Brugge, where he got back to playing football regularly in the Juliper Pro League.

He was a big player in the second half of the season once he had fully recovered from injury, but despite Hamburg remaining in the 2.Bundesliga, it's reported he has no long-term future in Germany.

Out of seemingly nowhere, French outlet Homme du Match report that Rangers are "set" to make a bid to bring him back to Ibrox.

Bates is 24 now and has just a year remaining on his contract so there is no doubt Steven Gerrard 's side could afford him if they wanted to.

But they have considerable strength in depth at centre-back so it remains to be seen whether the interest is genuine.

Brentford have also been tipped to make a move for him but they too are well stocked at the back having already signed Kris Ajer from Celtic.
