David Baddiel: 'My dad's despair at my career choice inspired God’s Dice'

David Baddiel has said his decision to write a play about physics was partly inspired by his father’s disappointment that he did not become a scientist.

The comedian and writer’s debut play God’s Dice is a tragicomedy about a physicist’s attempt to prove the science behind religious miracles such as Jesus turning water into wine.

Baddiel said: “The personal reason is my dad, who is still alive but has very advanced dementia now, was a scientist and very much wanted me to be a scientist and when I said ‘I’m going to study English’ he said, ‘It’s a waste of a brain’.”

Jonathan Creek actor Alan Davies is the lead, physicist Henry Brook.

He said it was his first stage role since 2005, adding: “It’s a big challenge, it’s a lot of work, but I’m an admirer of David, I think he’s very clever and funny and I know him well.”
