David Attenborough urges public to ditch meat and go vegetarian to save planet

Humans must stop eating so much meat and make the world wild again if we want to save it, Sir David Attenborough has warned.

In his new documentary, A Life On Our Planet, the 94-year-old outlines the decline of the planet’s environment and biodiversity – and urges people to reduce the amount of meat they eat, just as he has in recent years.

Sir David says: “We must change our diet. The planet can’t support billions of meat eaters.

“If we had a mostly plant-based diet we could increase the yield of the land. We have an urgent need for free land... Nature is our biggest ally.”

In the film Sir David reflects on the defining moments of his life as a naturalist – and the devastating changes he has seen.

He says: “The true tragedy of our time is still unfolding – the loss of biodiversity. The living world is our unique marvel. The natural world is fading.”

He has a new Netflix docu-film coming out (PA)

He adds: “The world is not as wild as it was. We have completely destroyed it.” But Sir David believes: “If we act now, we can put it right.”

He says: “We must restore biodiversity...We must rewild the world. And rewilding the world is easier than you think. A century from now our planet could be a wild place again.”

*A Life On Our Planet will be in cinemas from September 28 and on Netflix in the autumn.
