David Attenborough joins Instagram with climate change warning

Sir David Attenborough is officially on Instagram.

The 94-year-old made his social media debut to urge people to become more active in helping to save the planet.

Unsurprisingly the account has already proved hugely popular among the natural historian's fans, racking up 782k followers at the time of writing.

In his first post David shared a video explaining that after 60 years of television and radio work he was exploring this new way of communication because "the world is in trouble."

He added: "Continents are on fire, glaciers are melting, coral reefs are dying, fish are disappearing from our oceans, the list goes on and on.

"But we know what to do about it, and that's why I'm tackling this new way, for me, of communication.

"Over the next few weeks I'll be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them."

It comes ahead of his new film David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet, which airs on Netflix in October.

The account will be managed by the filmmakers and will showcase experiences making the film and important climate change messages from David himself.

The caption on the post continued: "Saving our planet is now a communications challenge. We know what to do, we just need the will."

It then explained: "That's why we want to share this message on Instagram. Because there is hope and together, we can inspire change.

"Social media isn't David’s usual habitat so while he's recorded messages solely for Instagram, like the one in this post, we're helping to run this account. In case you're wondering, 'we' are Jonnie and Colin and we worked with David on A Life On Our Planet.

"So, as well as sharing the messages he's recorded especially for this account we’ll also post some exclusive clips and behind the scenes content.

"Stay tuned."
