David Alaba confirms Bayern Munich transfer decision amid Liverpool links

Premier League clubs have been put on alert after David Alaba confirmed that he will be leaving Bayern Munich in the summer.

Alaba has previously been linked with a move to Liverpool, along with rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.

Real Madrid are also reported to be interested in signing the 28-year-old defender.

Alaba will call time on a trophy-laden 12-year career with Bayern when his contract expires at the end of June.

The versatile Austria international said at a press conference on Tuesday: “I have decided to do something new.

"It wasn't an easy decision. I have not yet made the decision where to go.

“I have personally decided to see something new, to look for a new challenge. That certainly took its time.

"It's no secret that my agent is negotiating with other clubs.

"I am looking for a new challenge to develop myself as a person on and off the pitch.

"Where can I continue to play football successfully? That will certainly be important in my decision."

Bayern this week agreed a deal to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig in anticipation of Alaba's impending departure.

Liverpool have been hit by defensive problems this season, with injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

The Reds signed two central defenders at the end of the January transfer window - bringing in Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak from Schalke.

Meanwhile, Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car says he was offered the chance to join Liverpool last month.
