'Dave the save!' - Cardiff City fans hail 'penalty king' David Marshall after shootout heroics send Scotland to Euro 2020

The sight of David Marshall saving an important penalty will not have come as a huge surprise to Cardiff City fans.

On Thursday night, Bluebirds legend Marshall came up trumps for Scotland in their crucial Euro 2020 play-off clash with Serbia when he denied Aleksandar Mitrovic's spot-kick to send his country through to next year's summer showpiece in dramatic fashion.

It was a special night for Steve Clarke's side, as it was for the millions of Scots watching at home, and it was Marshall who emerged the hero.

It will be a familiar feeling for a man who a decade ago produced a similarly magnificent display between the sticks for the Bluebirds against Leicester City in the 2010 Championship play-off semi-final.

That day he denied Martyn Waghorn and Yann Kermorgant, who attempted a chipped 'Panenka' penalty which the Scot saved with consummate ease.

And Marshall, now 35, went on to become a City great thereafter, racking up 278 appearances during a seven-year stint with the club, which included a Player of the Season campaign during the Bluebirds' first foray into the Premier League.

It is fair to say he still holds a fond place within the hearts of all Cardiff fans and, after his latest exploits for his beloved country, there was an outpouring of congratulatory messages from fans in south Wales.

Supporters flocked to social media to crown Marshall the "penalty king" as they threw their backing behind Marshall and the Scotland team, which also included former Bluebird Callum Paterson.

Ex-Bluebirds players, too, including Kevin McNaughton, himself a Scot, of course, Jay Bothroyd, Jon Parkin and Mark Hudson were also quick to lavish praise on their former team-mate.

There was a moment when Marshall could not celebrate after making that crucial Mitrovic save, when he had to check with the referee to see if VAR had to check whether his foot stayed on the line.

But, sure enough, the hero of the moment burst into celebration after he was given the nod by the official as he sent the Scottish nation into euphoria.

Sky Sports attempted to accost Marshall for a chat after the game, but after giving a brief analysis he cut-off the interview by declaring '"I don't even want to be here", before running back to celebrate with his team-mates on the pitch.

A brilliant moment for one of Cardiff's finest-ever servants.
