A BMX legend whose career was almost ended a year after it began when he was run over by a drunk driver, Dave Mirra was an inspirational figure to his fans and fellow extreme sports athletes.
Mirra’s body was discovered in the back of his truck with an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound on Thursday. The married father of two was discovered just hours after posting a picture of his wife and “rock”, Lauren, on Instagram. He was 41-years-old.
His sudden death has been marked by tributes underlining how Mirra's indomitable drive inspired others to push themselves further.
Mirra amassed 24 X-Games models throughout his career, including 14 gold, and medalled in 13 consecutive competitions prior to this. His success inspired the BMX video game, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX.
Tony Hawk, Carey Hart and a number of athletes led tributes to the BMX superstar.
ESPN also released a statement on Thursday night remembering his courage and strength.
“Dave Mirra, your courage, determination and natural skill in everything you pursued pushed the world of action sports to become a better place. From all of us at X Games and ESPN, we salute your contributions,” the sports leader said in the statement.
“Our sincere condolences go out to Dave's wife, Lauren, his daughters Mackenzie and Madison, the BMX community and friends of Dave Mirra.“
He is survived by his wife and their two children.
