Dave Martinez’s message to the Nationals: ‘You guys cured my heart’

In September, just a month before his Washington Nationals made a whirlwind run to a World Series title, 55-year-old manager Dave Martinez was taken to the hospital after feeling discomfort in his chest. The next day, Martinez underwent a cadiac catheterization procedure.

Via the Washington Post:

“I was so, so scared…. I started thinking about my kids, my family, my players, this team,” he said. “And then I thought, ‘Man, I am going to let so many people down.’ If I can’t do this, then what happens?”

Martinez quickly returned to work, but his health became a storyline in this World Series, after his furious tirade in Game 6 resulted in his ejection. A doctor checked on Martinez in the clubhouse after his outburst, just to be safe.

After the Nationals beat the Astros 6-2 on Wednesday, Martinez made sure to deliver a message to his team before they began celebrating in the clubhouse.

“This right here, and you guys, cured my heart. I’m good. Tonight I will celebrate with my boys because we are the world champions!”
