Dave King 'overwhelmed' by Rangers title win he ranks as most important in the club's history

Dave King insists this title is the most important that Rangers have ever one.

The former majority shareholder admitted he was “overwhelmed” to see Scottish Premiership title number 55 finally confirmed earlier today.

The South African businessman, who is in the process of selling his remaining shares to fans’ group Club 1872, revealed he was still nervous despite Steven Gerrard’s side building up a commanding lead at the top of the table.

And given the state the Ibrox club was when he returned to the board in 2015, he ranks this triumph as the greatest in the Light Blues’ history.

“I really was overwhelmed in the sense that over the last couple of weeks or even couple of months, there was a noise level coming out that Rangers can’t lose it from here,” he told the Essential Scottish Football podcast.

“My view was that it’s not over until it’s over and the manager and I discussed that.

“This league is just so important. It’s number 55 and you think it’s one of many so it gets lost in that but this is to me bay far, the most important title Rangers have ever won.

“The idea that that could somehow slip from our grasp in some way kept me on tenterhooks up until the end.

“It was such an emotional release when we finally got it over the line.

“If you look at the club which has been going for 150 years, I don’t think it’s ever had a time when the level of desperation was such that you thought it might never, ever come back from it.

“I was a kid growing up in Glasgow when Celtic were doing their first nine-in-a-row and they had this really invincible team. When you think back to the players they had and they’re going six, seven, eight in-a-row-, you can’t see where the next title will come from.

“But you know somehow that it will turn round and Rangers will get back there. It was the same when Rangers were doing nine-in-a-row and I was on the other side of that. I was on the board at the time and that team looked like it would go on to 10,11,12 and it didn’t happen.

“But there was still a sense that it would shift and Celtic might dominate, Rangers might dominate and other clubs might have come in from time to time.

“But this one was different.

“When I got involved with the club again, it wasn’t a normal situation where we were waiting in some sort of change in situation. The club was just in such a bad shape that there was a genuine possibility that the club would never have recovered.

“If I look at it in that context then certainly to me, this title says we have recovered, we are back, we are strong. Emotionally and intellectually, I consider this to be by far the most important title the club has ever won.”
