Dave King and his Rangers prophecy revisited as Celtic 'pack of cards' prediction now takes on different meaning

Former Rangers chief Dave King was nothing if not ambitious when it came to bold predictions.

The South African-based businessman wasn't afraid to go for it and his belief was turbo-charged after securing Steven Gerrard in the summer of 2018.

King famously stated rivals Celtic - riding a crest of a wave under Brendan Rodgers - could be removed as Scottish football's dominant force.

The 66-year-old was right on that point but he doubled down by insisting their city rivals would fold like a "pack of cards", if the Ibrox side were able to secure just one league triumph.

Rangers fans had to wait three years but it was worth it as Gerrard masterminded an undefeated league season that denied Celtic 10 In A Row, as they romped to glory by 25 points.

King was convinced that success would usher in a new era of Ibrox dominance but that is up for debate with Celtic aiming to prove last season's flop was an aberration rather than a long-term malaise.

But the ex-Rangers chief also raised a pertinent point that flew under the radar amid his bombastic title boast.

He was laying out a vision of how Rangers under Gerrard's stewardship could knock off Celtic but his words lend itself favourably to the current quick-fire return to form under Ange Postecoglou.

King pointed out the need for a manager with a plan and the ability to make a statement when the two great rivals faced each other.

And league leaders Celtic managed that with their rampant 3-0 win over Gio van Bronckhorst's side that returned them to the Premiership summit earlier this month.

King, in his wide-ranging 2018 interview, proclaimed: "The question is, that with Celtic's resources, does it put you beyond them forever? The answer is clearly no.

"We have seen the cycle. I was with Rangers when we thought Celtic would never catch up - never in a hundred years. Dick Advocaat said they would never, ever catch up. I think it lasted 17 minutes of the next game we played against them (Celtic's 6-2 win in August 2002).

"They caught up with us 17 minutes into the next game and then went past us because Martin O'Neill came in and figured out a different way to do it.

"You need the right management structure to do it. We have now gone very, very strong in the management squad."

King and Rangers fans would be right to point out that nothing is won yet and a second consecutive title win at Ibrox would have a significant impact on their fierce foes.

There's a £40million Champions League golden on the ticket with the winner of this season's Premiership set to dine at European football's top table.

King's belief Scottish football has a glass ceiling is right in theory, there have been many turnarounds that have made pre-season predictions look foolish.

But the man who was willing to put his neck in the line may have unintentionally made a case for his rivals while predicting long-term doom for Celtic.
