Dave Kilcoyne to take place on bench for Wales clash after being passed fit

Dave Kilcoyne will take his place on the Ireland bench against Wales on Saturday despite suffering a head injury in the opening Six Nations win over Scotland last weekend.

The Munster loosehead lasted 90 seconds after coming on for Cian Healy before he had to come off again.

But 'Killer' has been passed fit to feature at the Aviva Stadium

"He’s come through the RTP (return to play) protocols, so he’ll be fit and ready to go," said Ireland assistant coach Richie Murphy at a press conference in Abbotstown this afternoon.

Murphy also hailed the confirmation that James Ryan and Jacob Stockdale had signed new three-year central IRFU contracts to keep them with their respective provinces until the end of the 2022/23 seasons.

"It’s important to hold on to our top players and it’s very good for Irish rugby," said Murphy.

"Jacob is right up there at the prime of his career. So too with James Ryan."

Ireland skipper Johnny Sexton also praised the big contribution made at Test level by the duo over the past couple of years.

“They both broke through in 2018 in the Grand Slam and they’re probably contributing even more now than they were in terms of their personality and leadership," said Sexton.

"In 2018, they had some outstanding performances but they’re taking much more responsibility in terms of leadership."

Ireland will be facing a Wales side that has one change from last week's demolition of Italy, with Nick Tompkins making his first Six Nations start at centre and George North reverting to the wing.

Sexton is looking forward to facing a Welsh side guided by former Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac after the 12-year long Warren Gatland era.

He said: “It’s new, isn’t it, playing against a Welsh team being coached by somebody different. Warren Gatland is gone now.

"We’re so used to him and his way of playing, it posed us big problems and we had some huge battles over the years.

“We know Wayne Pivac and the new ideas he wants to bring in. We remember it from Scarlets at Leinster and at times we struggled, like when we lost in the PRO 14 semi-final against them a couple of years ago.

"Munster lost in a final to them. I’m sure both of our squads will be talking about it before this game.

"Off the pitch we’ve got a good relationships with most of them. On the pitch, they’re a great nation, proud nation and no one wants to take a backward step".
