Dave Cormack reveals Sir Alex Ferguson phonecall as he shuts down Stephen Glass Aberdeen hotel rumours

Aberdeen chief Dave Cormack has revealed he has been on the phone to Sir Alex Ferguson as a sounding board in the club’s search for a new manager.

Stephen Glass remains the frontrunner to replace the axed Derek McInnes who left the club last week after eight years.

Cormack, however, is adamant he has not offered the job to anyone as he carries out a thorough recruitment process.

The States-based Dons chairman rubbished rumours Glass has been holed up in an Aberdeen hotel isolating ahead of his appointment.

Instead, he insisted a lengthy interview process will be carried out so the North-East giants can find the right man.

Cormack told RedTV: “We have a clear criteria for what we’re looking for and we’ll sift through those applications this afternoon and get at the process as expediently as we can.

“There has been one or two outlyers (applying). We have had applications from Scotland, England, Europe and multiple applications from the States. The thing to remember is Aberdeen is a storied club and it is a highly- soughtafter position.

“I talked to Sir Alex Ferguson on Friday and he reminded me that in his position – and I agree with him – is that Aberdeen FC is the hardest club to manage outside of Celtic and Rangers and the hardest club to be chairman of. It’s a prestigious position for anyone.

“He said find a coach that you can work with, someone who will go to Glasgow and aim to beat Celtic and Rangers.

“Don’t look for second-best as far as that goes.”

Cormack dismissed speculation that Atalanta United 2 coach Glass is already back in the city preparing to be unveiled.

He added: “When we’re finished here I’ll be spending time with the board members to go through the applications and the approaches we’ve made ourselves over the last week.

“Just to make it clear to everyone, not one person has been offered the job or guaranteed the job.

“No one I know of is isolating at the Crowne Plaza in Aberdeen. I didn’t even know there was a Crowne Plaza in Aberdeen.

“We will go through a process and it will take us as long as it takes. It might take two weeks – it might take longer. But it’s a process we have to go through.

“People that know me know I’m a real process guy and it’s important we go about it.

“But here’s the key thing: we have got a strategy at the club –on and off the filed – that we put in place – in May 2019.

“There’s a clear plan there. I love the term ‘we may be wrong but we won’t be confused’.

“We have made a number of changes off the field – positive changes in my mind. Rob Wickes coming on board as our commercial director and Kevin Mac as our finance director and we have grown our off-the-field revenues.

“And similarly with the football operation, we have a clear strategy on the philosophy and how we want to play and bringing younger players through."
