Dave Cormack reveals Aberdeen story behind joyous man celebrating Kherson recapturing in Dons jacket

Dave Cormack took to Twitter to reveal the story behind an image of a man celebrating the recapture of the Ukrainian city Kherson - wearing an Aberdeen jacket. On Friday Ukrainian troops liberated the city which had been under Russian control since the onslaught of the invasion last March.

And amongst the celebrations and outpour of emotion, a photo emerged on social media of a man sporting an Aberdeen jacket embracing a Ukrainian soldier. The image attracted the attention of Dons chairman Dave Cormack, who took to his social media account to explain the incredible story behind the photo.

In two separate tweets, the US-based businessman also revealed that the city of Aberdeen have played their part in the humanitarian crisis by welcoming hundreds of Ukrainian and other refugee families to Pittodrie this season. He also expressed his curiosity at the picture and jokingly called on Twitter owner Elon Musk to help him find out the background behind the man in the image.

The tweet read: "Having welcomed a few hundred Ukrainian & other refugee families to Pittodrie & @AberdeenFC this season is anyone else curious to find out the background to this gentleman’s Dons connection, taken celebrating the recapture of Kherson. Let’s see what Twitter @elonmusk can do here."

In his second tweet, posted an hour or so later, Cormack then was able to confirm how the man may have got a hold of the Dons jacket, after consulting the club's retail department.

His follow up tweet read: "Our retail manager @DiversHill informs me that @AberdeenFC donated clothes to Ukraine last season in collaboration with @dundeeunitedfc & other Scottish Clubs. We also gave kit to a local fireman who made regular trips to the Polish/Ukrainian border to donate clothes, etc."

Fellow Twitter user and Dons fan Jason Hill also revealed his involvement in the distribution of the Aberdeen gear to struggling families. He tweeted: "Stuart Bootland of @dundeeunitedfc reached out and asked if we could help. @ally_begg introduced me to John Fairclough who was making regular trips to help those in desperate need of warm clothing. It's just the AFC way to help.

On the pitch, Aberdeen signed off for the World Cup break with a 1-0 victory at home to Dundee United last night. Bojan Miovski's first half penalty was enough to earn the three points for the Dandies, after Aussie keeper Mark Birighitti brought down Duk Lopes. The victory was their sixth home win in seven matches this season, and also ensured that they go into the break two points clear of 4th placed Livingston in third.

The Dons also have a semi-final in the Premier Sports Cup against Rangers to look forward to, as they aim to bring some silverware back to the Granite City for the first time since 2014.
