Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has called for "common sense" following Funso Ojo's red card against Dundee United.
Referee Bobby Madden brandished a red card for the Dons' midfielder after an incident with a fan during the clash at Tannadice.
The first half flashpoint happened when Ojo’s momentum took him into the advertising boards at the front of the Eddie Thompson stand.
A man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident during the Scottish Premiership clash.
Boss Stephen Glass was also sent to the stands and the club say they are "awaiting a formal explanation" of Madden's decision before taking "appropriate steps".
Pittodrie chief Cormack has now suggested the sending off should be overturned by the SFA.
He said: “The club are appalled at the events that unfolded yesterday afternoon and are fully supporting Funso who remains shaken by the entire incident.
“Given the circumstances around the incident, the club remains shocked at the decision to issue Funso with a second caution which led to his dismissal from the field of play.
"We sincerely hope that common sense will prevail and that the authorities will work with us to ensure that this injustice is addressed.”
Aberdeen director of football Steven Gunn added: “The manager is fiercely protective and supportive of all his players. Having viewed the footage and spoken to the player, he is totally behind Funso over this atrocious incident."
